The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools – At school safeguarding and pupil welfare are of the utmost importance. Pastoral care is in place to ensure that pupils are healthy and happy at school and can reach their full potential. There are a range of ways that pupils are supported by their teachers and members of staff. This is often through counselling, mentoring, offering open door guidance and the systems in place to help children feel a part of the school community.
Below we’ve shared some insight from an independent school in London on how pastoral care works and why it’s important in schools.
The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools
School Attainment
There’s a close relationship between health and school attainment. Pupils who aren’t so happy or have issues bothering them tend to have difficulties integrating at school which inadvertently affects their performance. Happier children on the other hand are more likely to attend school, engage and thrive.
Form Tutors
Form tutors have a big job, despite only seeing students briefly at the start of each day. They are designated teachers that they can go to with any issues that they are having with regards to school. As they see their students regularly, they are good judges of character and are able to spot when something’s wrong.
School House Systems
Community is important because it helps children feel as though they belong and are a part of something bigger. Most schools have what are known as “houses”. They are groups that pupils are separated into for school games, such as football, netball, and other challenges. They help bring about community as those in each house must work together and try their best.
The Social Side of School
School can be a tricky time for children. As well as the academic side, there’s the social aspect. Friendships change which can affect how they get on at school. If they are having problems with other pupils, your child can discuss them with their form tutor or mentor.
There are some great systems in place to support children at school and should you require help at home or advice regarding your child’s educational needs, there is support available for parents.
