Exploring Creative Writing with Your Child*

Creative writing is a great access point for children to harness their skills in literacy and their reading skills. Having the opportunity to write creatively gives your child a lot more opportunities to perform well in school essays, build up their grammar skills and develop sentence structures.

Exploring Creative Writing with Your Child

Here are some ways you can help your child improve their creative writing, and how it will give them a better grasp of knowledge.

Ask your child to write about anything they desire
Having a particular subject in mind can make things difficult, so opening up the playing field makes it a lot easier for your child in terms of what they feel happy to write about. If they have their own personal thoughts, for instance, they could jot those down; or if they are having a hard time with a particular subject they could express their feelings about it on paper.

Encourage your child to pick up a journal
A journal is a good way of popping down your own thoughts, feelings and emotions, but it also works as a great tool in improving a child’s creative writing. They’re writing all about what they feel about how their day has gone, or what they might have done differently for next time, which gives your child more confidence. A journal should be kept personal, but you should be able to see the results in what your child writes about aside from in their diaries.

Reading is fundamental
Children should learn to appreciate a good book, as well as learning what is involved in a good story and how the writing plays a pivotal role in your child’s writing skills. Get excited to start a new reading book together, be it a fantasy novel, a comic book or a picture book. Lean into your child’s interests to make things more interesting.
