History lessons, as you’ll recall, are a compulsory part of the curriculum. Your child will have the opportunity to learn about their own history as well as that of other cultures. They will explore topics from ancient Egypt to the Second World War which will help them to understand how privileged they are. Below are some more reasons which were shared with us by a boarding school in Ireland.
The subject also ensures that children learn from the mistakes of the past. There’s undoubtedly been many that have been made, whether that be political or with regards to societal norms and expectations. In history children can look back at these which creates discussion and a chance for them to learn good morals.
Another reason as to why children learn about the past is that it helps them in forming their identity and understanding their roots. Britain today didn’t just come to be. There were various migrations that took place. There were the Romans, Anglo Saxons and Vikings that contributed in one way or another.
The past also helps us to make better decisions for the future. There’s no way to foresee the future but the past can give us an indication as to what may happen and give us a better idea.
Interesting
There are lots of cool facts that they will learn whilst studying history. For example, did you know that tug of war was once an Olympic sport, or that ketchup was once used for medicinal purposes? Having subjects that are fun like history can help to make school more enjoyable and create a good relationship with education.
These are just a few of the reasons and of course, there are many more. If you liked this post and would like access to more parenting resources like this, stay up-to-date with my blog and head over to my archive where you can find more helpful information.
