How Does My Diet Impact My Fertility?

What we feed our body powers it and provides the nutrients for healthy bodily function and that includes our reproductive system. A lack of it and your body will struggle. If you’re looking to grow your family or are just curious as to how your diet could be affecting your fertility, you’re in the right place. This post shares some expert information that we’ve gathered from speaking with a London fertility centre.

Water
We all of course need to consume water. As well as protecting the body’s tissues and organs, it carries nutrients to its cells. Drinking the recommended amount of 8 to 10 cups a day can also improve fertility by improving cervical fluid quality in women and sperm count in men.

Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet consists of unsaturated fats, whole grains, vegetables, and fish. It’s linked to higher levels of fertility as it’s anti-inflammatory and promotes healthier glands and organs. At the same time, it cuts out foods which are harmful like refined sugar and saturated fats.

BMI
BMI, or body mass index, is a way of measuring how healthy you are. It divides your weight (in kilograms) by your height. Those with a higher BMI are thought to be more prone to obesity related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes which can put them at a disadvantage where their fertility is concerned. The research suggests that both men and women who suffer from the condition can experience a harder time getting pregnant. The same is so for those with a low BMI as being underweight can result in anovulation. However, it’s worth noting that BMI doesn’t always provide an accurate picture as it may be higher due to muscle mass.

If you would like to improve your chances of getting pregnant, we recommend visiting a fertility specialist. They offer fertility testing services for both men and women and can advise you on your fertility specifically.
