Helping Your Child Improve their Spatial Awareness – It can seem that children are accident-prone. Always bumping into things and falling over.
Helping Your Child Improve their Spatial Awareness
That’s because they aren’t very spatially aware. It’s a skill that they will develop though with your help and practise. Spatial awareness is how close we are in relation to the objects around us. It takes a little mental calculation and helps us to do things like reach out and grab, throw and do those that are as simple as walking around. Here are a few activities that were shared with us by a private nursery in Altrincham that you can use to help your child build theirs.
Hide and Seek
If you’re not familiar with the game, hide and seek involves two parties – hiders and seekers. Those hiding will need to hide well enough so that they aren’t caught and within a set amount of time before the hider is able to go looking for them. Regardless of their role in the game, they will need to think about the position of the objects around them so that they can hide/find those hiding when they are called out.
Play Sports
Whether you’re playing a ball game or are having a race, there’s a lot of spatial awareness that’s needed. Your child will need it to coordinate their efforts and as they do, their skillset will become stronger (especially as they will need to think and move fast).
Create Art Together
If your child’s not sporty there are other ways that you can help them, like by drawing for example. They can draw their surroundings which will get them to think about how close objects are in relation to one another and their proportions. They can build upon their fine motor skills at the same time as well as their creativity and problem-solving skills.
