How to Raise a Respectful Child*

Raising a child can be tough. There’s so much that you must prepare them for, including how to socialise with others. It’s important that they are respectful and considerate to those that they come across, even those that they don’t agree with. As their guardian, you lead the way and set an example for your child which is why you should take a leaf out of your own book and practice what you preach. Other than being a good role model, there are lots of things that you can do to shape your child into a respectful young person. Below are some of them from a private school in Battersea.

Dealing with Conflict
Heated situations can bring out the worst in us. We may not be able to handle our emotions, let them take over and end up being disrespectful. This is why it’s important to reflect on your feelings as it allows you to deal with them in the right way and not become overwhelmed.

Explore Different Perspectives
It’s more than likely that you will come across people that don’t see eye to eye with you in life and that’s perfectly okay. It’s important for children to understand and be accepting of this. One way that you can help to build their tolerance and empathy is through reading. Books introduce us to new concepts and ways of thinking that are different to our own. As they learn more, they will be able to consider things from new perspectives and begin to appreciate these differences.

Manners
The simplest way to show respect is to use proper manners like please, thank you, excuse me and sorry. It’s something that you can get them used to by reminding them.

Thinking About How Others May Feel
Going back to feelings, it’s also important that children understand them so that they can consider others’ and not be disrespectful towards them.
