Why Are Sports Important for Children? – As you would imagine, taking up a sport has incredible health benefits and especially for growing children. It’s a fun way that they can add exercise into their routine and work on building strength (gross motor skills). Aside from improved overall health and wellbeing, there are many lessons that children can learn through sports. Here are a few and some lesser-known benefits that were shared with us by a school with tennis courts for hire in Northwood.
Why Are Sports Important for Children?*
Mental Health
Exercise releases endorphins which can greatly improve their mental health. Sport also gives children an outlet to deal with their stress and other difficult emotions.
Endurance
Sports demand physical strength. They will need to be able to push themselves through difficult situations which can make them stronger and help them develop greater will power.
Resilience
Sport teaches children about winning and losing. As well as success they will also likely experience failure which can help them deal with it better when it happens in other areas of their life. It also can help them to build resilience and bounce back from their setbacks.
Self Esteem
To follow on from the points above, sports teach children about how far they can push themselves and what they are capable of which can help build their confidence and self-esteem.
Teamworking
Many are team games so your child will need to co-operate and work alongside others. One of the joys of working in a team is that they will get to split their responsibilities and learn from one another. They will need to learn to effectively communicate and be respectful towards their team members which will help them develop self-awareness and crucial skills that they will need throughout life.
Respect for Others and Rules
Games come with an agreed set of rules which must be obeyed and respected. This can teach children to respect authority and the importance of fairness.
Invest in things like a softball jersey or football kit that your child might enjoy wearing, to get their sporting adventures off to a great start.
