Summer for most people means days at the beach topping up the tan or enjoying the sunshine in a beer garden and plenty of smiles and laughter. Unfortunately, for people who suffer with a chronic illness, summer can mean more frequent flares.
With the rising temperatures this summer, it is so important to pay close attention to your body in order to minimise flares. Today I wanted to share some tips to stay cool during the summer of 2022.
Stay hydrated
Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you don’t think you’re thirsty. It’s a good idea to carry a water bottle around, taking small sips here and there. It’s also important to try to limit drinking alcohol as this will cause further dehydration. Have some rehydration salts to hand, they put back the sugar, salts and minerals that your body has lost.
Keep cool
Try to stay in air-conditioned environments. Most homes in the UK do not have air conditioning, so your best options will be using fans or taking cool showers. Also, use water in a misting bottle and spray on to your exposed skin while sitting or laying near a fan. The blowing air across lightly damp skin cools you instantly! For a really refreshing cold snack: put washed, seedless grapes in the freezer! It’s a fabulous way to enjoy them, especially the candy floss-flavoured ones! .
Dress comfortably
Wearing light, comfortable, and loose-fitting clothing can help regulate the temperature of your body. Bright colours and whites are always the best options, as dark colours tend to absorb heat. Avoid fabric such as nylon. The fabric acts like a furnace, trapping the heat inside, making you feel hotter. Plus, your skin is more likely to get irritated. It’s also worth investing in things like chub rub shorts, because this hot weather can play havoc with fuller thighs & that’s definitely something to avoid.
If you have any tips for surviving summer when you have a chronic illness, I’d love to hear them.
