How Can I Help My Child Become More Confident?*

Confidence is key. Without confidence, even the brightest of children can fall behind as they lack the confidence to ask for help and put themselves forward. It’s not something that is built easily and can take time. Here are some ways in which you can help your child to become more confident according to an independent school in Hertfordshire.

Praise and Compliment Your Child
Paying your child compliments can help them to feel loved, appreciated and good about themselves. It can feed into their self-image and make them feel more confident. While this is important, you should do so wisely as it can backfire on you if overdone and lose its value if what you’re saying doesn’t ring true.

Refrain from Mean Comments
While it may seem harmless, teasing children or pointing out “flaws” can affect their self-esteem and confidence. If there is something that you would like to discuss with them, you should be mindful of this and frame what you say carefully.

A Hobby
Hobbies not only give us something to do when we’re bored, but they also help children with developing their identity. Knowing that they’re good at something can help them with their confidence and as they work on perfecting their skill, it can grow.

Display Confidence
As their parent or guardian, you are your child’s biggest role model. The behaviour and attitudes that you display can influence theirs which is why it’s imperative that you practice what you preach. To help your child to be more confident, display it and talk positively about yourself. Vice versa, you should avoid talking negatively about yourself.
